Transboundary air pollution illustrated
Where does air pollution from US smokestacks end?
How far does air pollution travel? These pictures illustrate one case-study showing remarkable mobility of air pollution from US factory chimneys. Here, air pollution from the continental United States travels almost 2,000 miles to affect a small Inuit community.
The lower yellow pin in this first photograph shows the location of the Chemetco copper smelter in Hartford, Illinois, in the Midwest of the United States. The smelter closed in 2001.
The upper yellow pin is 1,804 miles further north (2,904 km) and shows the location of Coral Harbour, part of the new territory of Nunavut in the Canadian high Arctic.

The second picture shows Coral Harbour in more detail.
This is a NASA image showing Coral Harbour as it looks 1.3 kilometres above the earth's surface.
